Athens Marble and Granite Company has provided cemetery memorials since 1885.
In 1977 Warren and Jeanette Chandler of Athens acquired the company, along with
Master Grave Service, Inc., which manufactures and installs burial vaults as well as
opens and closes graves. Since then, the companies have been a family business
with the Chandlers' children, Walter, Warren Jr., and Linda, participating.

"No one enjoys planning for the loss of a loved one," says Jeanette, "but reality
dictates that the earlier certain decisions are made, the sooner the healing process
can begin." Athens Marble and Granite has been helping northeast Georgia families
with this difficult time. Memorials help to lift the shade of mourning for many families.

The companies serve the entire northeast Georgia region, including Atlanta. "Every
grave deserves a memorial of distinction," says Warren. "We help families choose a
memorial of granite, marble or bronze. We also do plot work, repairs, and additions to
the final dates on memorials."

Athens Marble and Granite Company was originally located on Foundry Street. Then,
for many years, when Atlanta Highway was still a two-lane road, the company was a
familiar sight to motorists coming into or leaving the city.

In 1970's, Warren Chandler and three of his fellow Athens firemen, who, like him,
were working the normal firefighter routine of one day on and one day off, bought
Athens Marble and Granite Company. All remained with the fire department
until retirement, which occurred for Warren in 1980.

In 1977 Chandler acquired 100 percent interest in the company from his partners at
the same time he purchased Master Grave Service, Inc.

In 1994, growth of the business necessitated a move to a large building on the
Atlanta Highway in Bogart, Oconee County.  As well as his involvement in Master
Grave Service, Inc. and Athens Marble and Granite Company.
